Extending The Conversation

A Fred Friendly Seminar does not end when the moderator wraps up. That is just the beginning. Since their inception, the Seminars have been used as a catalyst on campuses and in community centers, for professional groups and the general public, to encourage the exchange of ideas and build consensus for problem solving actions.

The award-winning television broadcasts have often been the centerpiece for extensive civic engagement campaigns to engage targeted audiences more deeply. For many programs, the Seminars team has reached out to national associations, leading institutions, and civic organizations with the capacity to host screenings and bring together key audiences. Educators at the high school, college and professional level also use Fred Friendly Seminars in their classrooms as a trigger for critical thinking.

Over the years, dozens of companion viewer guides have been created to help a teacher or facilitator lead a productive group discussion about challenging, and often controversial, issues. For more than a decade, extensive program websites have provided context and resources on the topics. With digital media, the opportunities for civic engagement are rapidly expanding. DVD distribution, streaming video, web-based interactivity, user-generated content, and social media are all providing new vehicles to extend the reach and impact of Fred Friendly Seminars.
